The basilisk lizard, also known as the "Jesus Christ lizard," is able to run across the surface of water for short distances. The lizard does this by using its strong back legs to create a series of small waves on the water's surface, which enables it to move forward without sinking. This adaptation allows the lizard to escape predators by fleeing across bodies of water. 4. Did you know that humans and giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae? Despite their long necks, giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae as humans: seven. However, each of their vertebrae is much longer than a human's, which allows their necks to stretch up to 6 feet in length. This unique adaptation enables giraffes to reach leaves and branches that other animals cannot, and also allows them to keep watch for predators. 5. Did you know that the world's oldest piece of chewing gum is over 9,000 years old? Archaeologists have discovered a 9,000-year-old piece of chewing gum made from birch bark tar in Sweden. The gum was likely used by ancient people as a form of toothpaste and to help relieve toothaches. This discovery proves that humans have been chewing gum for thousands of years!
