Significant Other’s Cold Knowledge My significant other is an amazing person with quirks and qualities that make me fall in love with them all over again every day. One of the things that fascinates me most about them is their seemingly endless supply of cold knowledge. Here’s a look at some of the coolest things I’ve learned from my significant other over the years: 1. Penguins have knees! Yes, you read that right. Despite their waddling gait, penguins actually have knees. However, unlike humans, their knees are located high up on their bodies and are not visible to the naked eye. 2. Sloths only poop once a week. My significant other shocked me with this fact during a conversation about conservation efforts for sloths. Apparently, these adorable little creatures have such a slow metabolism that they only need to go to the bathroom once a week. 3. The coldest temperature ever recorded on earth was -128.6 degrees Fahrenheit. My significant other is a science geek, so I shouldn’t have been surprised when they shared this information with me. However, I was still blown away by the sheer coldness of it all. 4. Cows have best friends. As a vegetarian, my significant other has done their fair share of research about animal behavior. One of the more heartwarming things they shared with me is that cows are social creatures who form close bonds with each other. Some cows even have best friends that they prefer to spend time with above all others. 5. Humans can survive for up to five minutes without oxygen. This one comes with a caveat, of course. While it’s technically true that humans can survive for a few minutes without oxygen, the brain can start to suffer damage after just a few seconds without it. Still, it’s a fascinating piece of trivia. 6. Honey never spoils. I’ve always been fascinated by the science of food preservation, so it was cool to learn that honey is one of the few foods that never goes bad. Archaeologists have even found pots of honey that are thousands of years old and still edible. 7. Armadillos can carry leprosy. I’ll admit, this one freaked me out a little bit. Apparently, armadillos are one of the few animals that can carry leprosy, a bacterial disease that affects the skin and nerves. While the risk of contracting leprosy from an armadillo is relatively low, it’s still a good idea to avoid contact with them if you can. 8. The tallest mountain in the solar system is on Mars. My significant other loves all things space-related, so I’m not surprised that they were able to share this fact with me. Olympus Mons, a volcanic mountain on Mars, is almost three times the height of Mount Everest. 9. Snails can sleep for three years. This one seems almost too crazy to be true, but apparently it is. Some species of snails have the ability to hibernate for up to three years, during which time they’ll slow down their metabolism and essentially shut down until conditions improve. 10 Bees can recognize human faces. My significant other is a beekeeper, so I’ve learned a lot about the fascinating behavior of these tiny insects. One of the most interesting things is that bees have the ability to recognize individual human faces, which they use to determine whether someone is a threat or not. In conclusion, my significant other may have a wealth of knowledge about all kinds of things, but their love and support is what I value most of all.
